How Injured Athletes Can Recover  (...And Stay That Way), From Frustrating Sports Injuries That Keep You From Enjoying Your Sport And Being Active”

If you've recently had a Sports Injury, or if you've been suffering with an injury for a while--it can be very tempting to pass it off as "nothing serious" and simply "put up with it" to just keep playing the best that you can.

OR, it can easily be disheartening and end up feeling "stuck" and wondering if you'll ever be able to get back to playing or even just keep active like you used to...

If this is happening to you, you're not alone-we see this all the time.  In fact, we see people living with an injury from sports and exercising in at our Valley Cottage Physical Therapy office no matter the time of year...

We have been rehabilitating athletes for years from every type of sports injury and know how to help people recover from them.  When high level athletes get injured, we start treatment the NEXT DAY!!

This is completely opposite to the way that most people respond to a sports injury, and why so many people suffering from a Sports Injury want to know the answers to these Questions:

"It's Been Months Now--Why am I still Suffering With an Injury That's Stopping Me From Being Active and Playing My Favorite Sport...Even after Doing ALL this Stretching, Rolling and Training?"

Most people think that when they get a Sports Injury, it will get better after resting for a few days, and then they'll be able to return to their sports and exercises again.  BUT then when they go back to exercising again, they're still limited--sometimes it's even worse than when it first started.  Often when you rest the pain goes away--but as soon as you start again, it comes back and no matter how much rest you give the problem, it just doesn't seem to be improving.

Does This Sound Like You?

Another scenario we see all the time in our physical therapy office is when people go to their Doctors, and the well-meaning Doctor tells them to "rest", "try these pills", "stretch", "wear a brace", "maybe go for a message" and "come back in 4 weeks if its no better"--but 4 weeks later, they end up back at the same Doctor's office again, because it hasn't gotten any better, only to be told to rest MORE, and given yet ANOTHER prescription of even stronger pills.

The problem is that when it comes to sports injuries - hamstring stains, ankle sprains, runner's knee, etc., - complete rest is rarely the best advice.

Has This Ever Happened to You?

Maybe you are confused because you've been told a bunch of different things, by a bunch of different people (from other athletes, to coaches, to a massage therapist, to your well-meaning Doctor).  Maybe you think you have to give up your sport because it is the source of your pain, or that you should be doing "this exercise" or "that stretch" to make it better.

Sports Injuries can be very confusing, because (more often than not) where the pain is coming from isn't actually the area that needs to be fixed and worked on--and if you rest for too long, other parts of the body become problematic.

It's very confusing to know exactly what to do - and that's just to avoid making the pain worse!

And because of this confusion - this often leads people to procrastinate and put off making a decision about what to do to help get back to playing the way they have always loved.  Worse, many people just end up accepting it as "part of life" and give up--as if that's the way it "has" to be.

Is This How You Feel Too?

If You're Currently Frustrated and Living with a Sports Injury, Here's 7 More Reasons Why It Could Be Lasting Longer Than It Should:
  1. You thought that it would just go away - but it didn't

  2. You went to the Doctor who told you to rest, wear a brace, and take pain-killers-but the pills did nothing to help, all they did was mask the pain and as soon as they wore off, the pain from running came right back again

  3. A Friend of family member told you that "everybody get pain from sports injuries as they get older, so you just accept it"

  4. You tried to get help from other Healthcare Professionals or a Physical Therapist in the past, but nothing they said or did seemed to help

  5. You've tried braces and orthotics, but they didn't seem to make the pain go away

  6. You thought it would be a good idea to rest because you experienced pain during and after your run, but as soon as you start training again, the pain comes right back.

  7. You tried a few exercises from "YouTube"/"Google"-but they felt painful when you did them, and did nothing to help you get back to playing pain-free.

If any of these have happened to you - we would love to help you by inviting you to book a call to talk to one of our specialist Physical Therapists at our Valley Cottage, NY office to find out what can be done to help you.

The fact that you've tried any or all of these things already is actually a GOOD THING because when you know what doesn't work -- you are closer to finding the thing that does!

"What Can I Do To Get Back on the Court/Field Quickly?"...

Here's 3 things you can do:

  1. First, you need to make a decision about getting help.  So MANY people rest for weeks, hoping that the pain will "just go away with time", but then 3 weeks later you go back to playing and there that pain is again...or WORSE, the pain is more intense when you start up again.

  2. Next, do the RIGHT exercises - one of the best things to help you recover from a Sports Injury is to do the correct series of individually designed and progressed exercises - the right exercises given to you by a Physical Therapist will help reduce pain and allow you get back to your sports and exercises --and make sure that the problems don't come back any time soon.

  3. Avoid "Too Much Rest"--while rest is an important part of the recovery process, too much rest won't do anything to help you recover quickly.  Many people believe that recovery means total rest from exercise.  In order for an injury to recover, blood flow is needed which rest prevents.  Appropriate recovery and strengthening exercises, along side with manual hands-on treatment, will really help to heal the injury and allow you to get healthy and active as quickly as possible.

  4. Get real, "hands-on" Physical Therapy--Physical Therapy is proven to help people with pain from running.  In fact, at Empire Sports Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, it's one of our specialties.  If your running pain is effecting your health, your ability to keep exercising, and even effecting all your relationships--Physical Therapy can help you back to living the life you deserve as quickly as possible.
